The BFG

By Roald Dahl
This term's novel study was a huge success. The BFG is such a classic tale. Adored by children and teachers everywhere. The movie was a delight too, the new Steven Spielberg film was a true delight. I think a big part of the magic of the book is the clever way in which Dahl has the BFG talk. I'm sure there is a system or style he speaks in but all I know it is very clever and I enjoyed using 'the voice' twice as much as the children enjoyed listening to it.

Synopsis

The BFG is a nice and jumbly giant. In fact, he is the only big friendly giant in giant country. All the other giants are big bonecrunching brutes, and now the BFG and his frined Sophie must stop them guzzling up little human beans - with some help from Her Majesty THE QUEEN.

Matilda

By  Roald Dahl
This term's class reading book was Matilda by Roald Dahl. I always love Roald Dahl and I still feel that he a quality introduction to Novel Study for my seven and eight year olds. We shared character profiles, wrote diary entries and discussed a variety of issues around school and discipline. The last of which was as much a surprise to me as anyone.
The language Dahl uses paints such a brilliant mental image easily accessible to my younger students. Many a time we have translated his words into images, with great delight. Towards the end of the novel study we watch the movie version create a compare and contrast chart.

  Synopsis

Matilda is a little girl who is far too good to be true. At age five-and-a-half she's knocking off double-digit multiplication problems and blitz-reading Dickens. Even more remarkably, her classmates love her even though she's a super-nerd and the teacher's pet. But everything is not perfect in Matilda's world. For starters she has two of the most idiotic, self-centered parents who ever lived. Then there's the large, busty nightmare of a school principal, Mrs. ("The") Trunchbull, a former hammer-throwing champion who flings children at will and is approximately as sympathetic as a bulldozer. Fortunately for Matilda, she has the inner resources to deal with such annoyances: astonishing intelligence, saintly patience, and an innate predilection for revenge. She warms up with some practical jokes aimed at her hapless parents, but the true test comes when she rallies in defense of her teacher, the sweet Miss Honey, against the diabolical Trunchbull. There is never any doubt that Matilda will carry the day. Even so, this wonderful story is far from predictable. Roald Dahl, while keeping the plot moving imaginatively, also has an unerring ear for emotional truth. The reader cares about Matilda because in addition to all her other gifts, she has real feelings.

Danny Champion of the World

By Roald Dahl

I shared this book with my class this time last year. As I began the novel studies with my class there was no better author to choose than Roald Dahl. And as I had enjoyed the reading of this back when I was their age I had to pick Danny Champion of the World. I love this story.
This is not Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with its crazy descriptions, nor is it The Twits with its revolting descriptions. This feels different, it feels like a real story with depth of character.
I love the realtionship Danny has with his Dad. I love the way they are breaking the law for the greater good. I love the way they eventually 'stick it to the man'. Their are so many opportunities to teach students, about literature, writing, but more so than that about integrity, justice, fairness, tenacity and bravery.

Synopsis

Danny thinks the world of his father, but imagine his surprise when he finds out he's been breaking the law! Even grown-ups bend the rules sometimes, but Danny knows his father is still good, kind and clever and full of exciting ideas.
Join them in this thrilling adventure as they hope to pull off the most daring and dangerous plan ever.
