Helen Keller, Girl of Courage

By Francene Sabin

Each Friday in assembly each teacher picks a 'Duffy book' from from the box to give to a student who has put in a lot of effort in some regard. The box is filled perhaps twice a year.  This book has been sitting, unread in the Duffy box waiting for a home to go to since half way through last year. Helen Keller keeps appearing in my 'quote of the day' over recent weeks and it reminded me that this book is sitting, waiting for a home.

I loved this little book. Its write with 9 year olds in mind and its vocabulary, font size and illustrations show that. But its a great little summary of Helen's life, her trials and challenges. Its made we want to find out more. To dig deeper about this strong, Medal of Freedom winner. I strongly recommend you have your kids read and reflect upon this amazing life.

Synopsis

When Helen Keller was two years old, she got a terrible disease that left her deaf, blind, and mute. But despite her challenges, she worked hard to speak, read and write - and inspired many people to do the same.
