Frindle

By Andrew Clement
What a delightfully, wonderful read. Its a heart warming tale of the challenges of the English language.
I bought this book with my birthday money so I could share it with class and add it to my #kid100 books. But like the good teacher I am, I thought it best to review the material before I share it. I really enjoyed this book. Nicholas Allen is bit of a nerd and something of a rebel. But my favourite character is his 'nemesis' Mrs Granger who is the 'hard-case' English teacher that firstly inspires Nick and then does everything she can to stand up against Nick's crazy idea.

The Children's Literature Association named Frindle the best English-language children's book published in 1996 that did not win a major contemporary book award, thus making it the winner of the Phoenix Award for 2016.

Synopsis

"Is Nick Allen a troublmaker?"
He really just likes to liven things up at school - and he's always had plenty of great ideas. But it looks like Nick's days of classroom shenanigans are over - thanks to his no-nonsense teacher, Mrs Granger. That is, until Nick learns an interesting tidbit about how words are created. This inspires his greatest plan yet: invent a word. From now on, a pen is no longer a pen- it's a frindle. But what happens when the word starts to catch on ...around school, around town? Suddenly, frindle doesn't belong to Nick anymore. The word is spreading and there is nothing Nick can do to stop it...
